Forging is a type of pressure processing.
It involves using mechanical pressure to deform a hot, malleable metal to achieve a specified shape and size. The purpose of forging does not involve changing its physical properties; these are addressed through subsequent heat treatment and surface treatment.
The most common method is die forging, where metal is pressed into a die to form the desired shape.
The purpose of forging is to shape a blank and control its internal structure and properties to achieve the required geometry, dimensions, and quality of a forging. Generally, the internal structure and mechanical properties of castings are inferior to those of forgings. More important parts are produced using the forging process.
