Stamping is one of the basic methods of metal plastic processing. It is mainly used to process sheet forgings, so it is often called sheet stamping.

Because this method is carried out at room temperature, it is also called cold stamping. Although the above two names fail to fully express the content of the stamping process very accurately, it has been widely recognized in the field of mechanical engineering.

During the stamping process, the stamping equipment applies force (total strength) to the die, and then through the action of the die, the total strength is dispersed to different parts of the forging blank in a certain order according to the stamping requirements, so that it produces the necessary stress state and corresponding plastic deformation. In fact, not only the working part of the die is used to make the forging blank plastically deformed, but also the working part of the die is used to control the plastic deformation of the forging blank, so as to achieve the purpose of stamping. Therefore, it can be considered that stamping equipment, die and blank are the three basic elements of the stamping process.

The study of these three basic elements is the main content of stamping technology. Compared with other plastic processing methods, stamping has many obvious characteristics. Stamping is a process that relies on stamping equipment and dies to perform plastic processing on forging blanks. It uses the simple movement of stamping equipment and dies to complete the manufacturing process of parts with quite complex shapes, and does not require too much involvement of operators. Therefore, the production efficiency of stamping is very high and the product quality is stable. Under normal circumstances, the production efficiency of stamping is dozens of pieces per minute.

Moreover, since the operation of the stamping process is very simple, it provides very favorable conditions for the mechanization and automation of the operation process. Therefore, for some mature stamping forgings, the production efficiency can reach hundreds or even thousands of pieces per minute (such as standard parts and tanks that need to be mass-produced).
